What parts of a dart wear out?

Barrels

Tungsten barrels are durable. Over time, sharp grip peaks can soften, coloured coatings can mark and contact points may polish. This normally happens gradually. The important checks are that all three barrels match and that the front and rear threads are undamaged.

Points

Steel-tip points are replaceable. Surface marks are normal, but bent, shortened or heavily damaged points may need replacing. Swiss Point models should also be checked for damaged point threads.

Shafts and flights

Shafts and flights are consumable parts and are easily replaced. Their condition should not usually determine whether a good barrel set is worth buying, unless the original accessories are important to a collector.

When might used darts not be the right choice?

Buying new may be preferable when you want untouched packaging, a manufacturer warranty, a newly released model or a very specific weight that is difficult to find second-hand. Collectors may also place more importance on complete packaging and original accessories than players who only want the barrels.
